The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recently issued proposed rules to list four species of macaws as endangered under the ESA. The four species include great green, hyacinth and military macaws, as well as a subspecies and a distinct vertebrate population segment of the scarlet macaw. The action comes after a 2008 petition by Friends of Animals.
The four macaw species, found in Central and South America, face significant threats, particularly habitat loss and degradation and poaching.
