Three OWAA members nominated for Emmy
Judy Nugent, Jack Abrams, Dan Small and Michael Garvin have been nominated for an Emmy Award by the Chicago/Midwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for their work on a special episode of “Outdoor Wisconsin.” Producer/videographer and reporter Nugent traveled around Wisconsin documenting scientific research being conducted on the state’s black bear population. Nugent said that since the airing of the show, the University of Wisconsin – Steven’s Point has received many financial donations in support of the project. This is the first Emmy nomination for Outdoor Wisconsin, which will begin its 26th consecutive season on Public Television in January. Dan Small hosts the program and Jack Abrams is its executive producer/director. The Emmy Awards will be held Nov. 7 at the Park West in Chicago.
New iPhone aplications cater to hunters, fishermen
Two new iPhone applications enable hunters and fishermen to receive up-to-date Datasport Inc. game and fish forecasts from their mobile phones. The HuntCast and FishCast apps allow users to select a date from a calendar and view the forecast graph for that date. Datasport uses a combination of historical data, scientific variables and solunar tables to predict the times that wildlife and fish will be most active during the day. HuntCast and FishCast are currently available for download in the iTunes App store. SHOT Show
Registration is open for the Shooting, Hunting and Outdoor Trade (SHOT) Show to be held at the Sands Expo and Convention Center in Las Vegas, N.M., Jan. 19-22, 2010. Record-breaking attendance – estimated to total about 60,000 people – is expected at this year’s event. Exhibitors will have the opportunity to promote their products and services to the largest gathering of distributors, manufacturers, outdoor media and retailers in the world. 2010 Bassmaster schedule announced
The schedule for the 2010 Bassmaster Opens consisting of nine events in eight states has been set. The Opens is divided into three qualifying divisions – Southern, Central and Northern. Each division consists of three events. Since the circuit schedules don’t overlap, anglers can sign up for all three circuits. Registration for BASS members begins on Thursday, Nov. 5 for the Northern circuit, Nov. 12 for the Southern circuit and Nov. 19 for the Central circuit. BASS members can compete in all Open events. Certain pre-qualified anglers can register early. Interested participants can sign up at www.Bassmaster.com or call (877) BASS-USA.
Gander Mountain to go private
Gander Mountain Company, the nation’s largest retail network of hunting, fishing, camping and marine products and services, has announced its intent to cease its public company status. The board of directors has approved a plan to cease the registration of its common stock with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) under the Securities Exchange Act of 1934. The company expects that as a result of this deregistration, its shares of common stock will no longer be listed on the NASDAQ Global Market. The decision to take the company private arose out of the board of directors’ conclusion that the disadvantages of remaining an SEC-reporting company, including the costs associated with ongoing regulatory requirements, outweighed the benefits of public company status to the company and its shareholders. The company anticipates the transaction will be completed in early 2010.
Hummingbirds create buzz on Outer Banks
Hummingbird researcher Susan Campbell will lead two two-hour programs aimed at demonstrating techniques for attracting, capturing and banding hummingbirds at this year’s Wings Over Water Wildlife Festival to take place Nov. 3 through Nov. 8 on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Campbell’s program is just one of the festival’s 80-plus offerings. Other festival offerings include paddling, natural history, photography and opportunities to learn about the area’s rich history. Due to popular demand, there will be more photography programs taught by professional photographers at this year’s event. Classes have been designed for both the skilled and the not-so-practiced photographers.
