South Pass City Historic Site is open to visitors all summer long, so you can finally start feeding your gold rush fever in Wyoming’s Wind River Country/Fremont County.
The historic gold-rush ghost town has been open to the public since May 9, and tours of the Carissa Mine will kick off May 28 and run until Labor Day.
In the late 1860s, miners discovered gold in the South Pass City area at 8,000 feet elevation, and the city boomed to life—lives and booms centered around the Carissa Mine. After a number of boom and bust cycles and nearly 100 years, the Carissa Mine finally ended operations permanently in 1956.
Today, visitors can visit the 20 historic buildings that comprise historic South Pass City, which is one of the best-preserved gold mining towns in the American West. Guests still pan for gold, stop by the saloon, buy penny candy at the general store and walk through the Carissa Mine. Plan your visit around Carissa Mine tour dates, or maybe even stop by during Gold Rush Days, July 9 and 10, 2016, the ultimate historic gold-mining immersion experience.
Feed that gold fever. Head to South Pass City and leave at least a little richer.
