SCI Foundation, Mossy Oak team-up on conservation education

Tucson, AZ: This summer one of America’s foremost conservation organizations and most popular camouflage companies have teamed-up to offer educators a unique hands-on opportunity to learn about the North American Model of Wildlife Management.
Safari Club International Foundation (SCI Foundation) and Mossy Oak are conducting a professional development course for teachers from across the nation and Canada in a Wyoming wilderness setting. The American Wilderness Leadership School (AWLS), located in Jackson, Wyoming, offers a college-level course in “conservation” – understanding natural resources management and, more specifically, management of wildlife. Individual classes in this seven-day workshop include stream ecology, riparian ecology, human impacts on wildlife habitat, introduction to shooting sports and instructor certification for the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP).
Each year 250 teachers from around the United States and Canada attend the AWLS summer workshops, where Mossy Oak is sponsoring attending educators. Five intensive seven-day sessions are being held to help these key educators embrace the hunting tradition and help them integrate it with science, math and social studies that can be taught both inside and outside the classroom.
“Getting youth outdoors and using nature to teach is integral to the Mossy Oak lifestyle. SCI Foundation’s American Wilderness Leadership School gives educators the opportunity to use the outdoors as a classroom,” said Ben Maki, Senior Vice President, Chief Marketing Officer at Mossy Oak. “They are learning how to incorporate conservation lessons into science, math, language arts, social studies and physical education. We’re proud to support AWLS.”
