“Step into the arena, and have fun,” said Howard Fox. “Many of us have limiting beliefs (i.e. not good enough) because we’re not journalists or experienced freelancers. OWAA is a great place to develop and nurture the skills needed to become outdoor writers.”

What are your areas of Outdoor Communication?

I host and produce the Outdoor Adventure Series Podcast.

What drew you to the field?

My podcasting began in 2019 as a means for my LinkedIn coaching clients to create articles for their blogs. I enjoyed the interviews so much that I launched the Success InSight Podcast in 2019. The Outdoor Adventure Series began in 2020 after my move from Chicago to Las Vegas. It became its own brand this past January.  By year-end, we expect to have published close to 75 OutdoorAdventure Series episodes.

What enticed you to join the Outdoor Writers Association of America?

My friend, Lynda O’Connor is a publicist from Chicago; I think she’s a member of the Outdoor Writers Association of America. She encouraged me to join because she thought the OWAA would be a great source of guests. She was correct.

What is your favorite outdoor activity?

I love heading out to the desert for short hikes, car camping (or boondocking), and most of all taking pictures of the Milkyway.

What are you currently working on?

I am producing a podcast series for the NOAA Office of the National Marine Sanctuaries to celebrate their 50-year anniversary.  My pitch to the NMS came as a result of attending the April webinar, in which Grace Bottitta-Williamson discussed how the sanctuary system works. Their Communications Director, Vernon Smith was on the call, and I reached out to him to present the idea. By the time we finish,  I expect about 7-10 interviews.

What have you gained from being a member of the Outdoor Writers Association of America?

I feel like I have found my tribe. Everyone has been helpful and supportive, and as I mentioned earlier, many of my podcast guests have a connection back to the OWAA. After the conference in Casper, I am beginning to niche-down to focus on the environment, conservation, and stewardship stories.

What is one piece of advice you’d give to someone thinking of joining?

Step into the arena, and have fun.  Many of us have limiting beliefs (i.e. not good enough) because we’re not journalists or experienced freelancers. OWAA is a great place to develop and nurture the skills needed to become outdoor writers.  And for what it’s worth, I love sharing with folks, when asked, that I am a Podcast Journalist.
