With concerns about the declining population of menhaden, the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission voted to sharply reduce the allowed catch of the fish. American Sportfishing Association’s Ocean Resource Policy Director Mike Leonard thanked the commission on behalf of the ASA.
“The commission recognized both the impact that menhaden have on the ocean ecosystem and the impact they have on the numerous fisheries that depend on them for survival,” Leonard said.
Menhaden, which support the population of such species as striped bass, bluefish and the Atlantic tuna, has declined in population by 88 percent in the last 25 years and are at their lowest abundance in recorded history. To learn more, visit http://www.asafishing.org/newsroom/news_pr11102011.html.
