Sweepstakes benefit outdoor youth program
Help support the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance’s outdoor youth program through the Trailblazer Adventure Sweepstakes. The grand prize is $10,000 cash or a Toyota Tundra 4×4 lease. Prizes also include shotguns, bows, muzzleloaders, rifles, bullets, outdoor gear, optics and more. Tickets are available through the organization’s Web site, www.ussportsmen.org/Page.aspx?pid=941. The Alliance ask sfor a voluntary donation of $5 per ticket. The drawing will take place on or around Dec. 28, 2009.
National Wildlife Photo Contest deadline is July 20
It’s time again for the National Wildlife Photo Contest – its 39th annual competition. This is the magazine’s biggest contest ever: Cash prizes totaling $25,000 plus other gifts will be awarded to winners in Professional, Amateur and Youth divisions, including $5,000 each for two grand prize winners, one professional and one amateur. You can submit as many as 20 images in any combination of the following categories: (1) Mammals: portraits and behavior; (2) Birds: portraits and behavior; (3) Other Wildlife: portraits and behavior (includes underwater life, reptiles, amphibians, insects and more); (4) Backyard Habitats: wild creatures, native plants and natural settings in your yard; (5) Connecting People and Nature: people enjoying the outdoors; (6) Landscapes and Plant Life: scenic views and native plants in wild settings; and (7) Global Warming and Wildlife: portraits and behavior of specific species affected by global warming (see the complete list of species at www.nwf.org/photozone/categories.cfm). Wilberscheid earns Wisconsin award
Bob Wilberscheid, OWAA member from New Holstein, Wis., received the Wisconsin Indian Head Country’s Warren Knowles Award for 2009. It was presented to him at the Governor’s Fishing Opener in Hayward on May 2. Wilberscheid, who serves on the board of directors of the Wisconsin Outdoor Communicators Association, writes for the Tri-County News (distributed in Chilton, Kiel and New Holstein), the Chilton-Times Journal, and Badger Sportsman. He has represented sportsmen of Calumet County for 29 years on the Conservation Congress, and has served as county chairman for the past 10 years. Other OWAA members who have received the Warren Knowles Award in earlier years include Gene Cooper (1996) and Tim Eisele (2004). The late Warren Knowles was governor of Wisconsin and started the annual fishing opener to call attention to Wisconsin’s fisheries resources and tourism opportunities. Flanigan honored by outdoor writers groups
Tim Flanigan of Bedford, Pa., recently received several Excellence in Craft awards from the Pennsylvania Outdoor Writers Association (POWA) and the Mason/Dixon Outdoor Writers Association (MDOWA). POWA honored Flanigan with its Best Published Color Photo Award for an image of an American woodcock that appeared on the cover of Wildlife in North Carolina Magazine. He received the Young Trees Award for his article, “Regenerating forests offer some of the best habitat for wildlife,” which appeared in The Pennsylvania Outdoor Times. He also received the Photo Art of the Year Award for an image of a screaming red-tailed hawk. The Mason Dixon Outdoor Writers Association presented Flanigan its Best Published Color Photo Award for an image of a ruffed grouse feeding upon multi-flora rose fruit that appeared on the cover of the Ruffed Grouse Society’s magazine. He also received the Bass Pro Shop-sponsored Pass it On Award for his article, “Special Deer Hunters,” that was published in The Pennsylvania Outdoor Times.
Outdoor Trails Network teams with Versus
The Great American Outdoor Trails Radio Magazine has caught the attention of Versus with its fully illustrated “Watch What You Hear” podcasts. The podcasts will be carried on the network’s outdoor programming Web site, www.VersusCountry.com, and will include individual segments featuring guests of the radio program. “We’re excited to partner with Versus Country,” said Jim Ferguson, host of the Great American Outdoor Trails Radio Magazine. “It’s a great opportunity for many people to see and hear our program and we’re glad the network chose us to provide content for their newly revamped Versus Country Web site.
