Ed Kanze will serve as study leader on a Smithsonian Journeys trip to Australia and New Zealand Feb. 22-March 15. This will be his fifth trip to Australia and eighth to New Zealand, and it will be his second time going to those countries as a Smithsonian leader.The trip includes about 10 days in Australia, visiting the Great Barrier Reef and the ancient rainforests of Northern Queensland. Then it’s off to the center of the country for visits to Alice Springs, Uluru National Park, and the gorgeous, remote West MacDonnell Ranges. Sydney and environs will wrap up the Aussie part of the trip before the group flies across the Tasman Sea to New Zealand. There they will visit Mt. Cook National Park (where Edmund Hillary earned his stripes as a climber before Everest), Queenstown, Milford Sound, the lush rainforests of Fiordland National Park, and the geysers and hot pools of Rotorua. Smithsonian recruited Kanze to lead the trips on the basis of his work as an Adirondack guide, his past experience as a National Park Ranger, and his acclaimed books, “Notes From New Zealand” (Henry Holt, 1992) and “Kangaroo Dreaming” (Random House and Sierra Club, 2000).
