ROWMAN & LITTLEFIELD BUYS GLOBE PEQUOT PRESS creating major outdoor book publishing presence

The Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Group, Inc. of Lanham, MD has announced the purchase of Globe Pequot Press, the book-publishing division of Morris Communications Company LLC of Augusta, GA, effective May 22, 2014.  With the purchase of the company, based in Guilford, CT., R&L acquires the imprints formerly known as Globe Pequot Press, Lyons Press, Falcon Guides, Knack, Two Dot, and Insiders’ Guide. Morris will retain its Milepost, Skirt, Pop Out, and Western Horseman Books imprints as well as its U.K.-based Footprint Guides.  The sale combines several of the best known imprints in the outdoor and sporting worlds.
R&L President and CEO, Jed Lyons, stated, “With the addition of the Globe Pequot Press imprints, R&L becomes one of the largest publishers of outdoor books in the country. Joining our CountrySport, Derrydale Press, Fly Rod & Reel Books, and Shooting Sportsman Press imprints are Falcon Guides and Lyons Press. We will be publishing several dozen outdoor titles annually. The expansion of our outdoor publishing program strengthens our position in that market while we continue to grow and develop our core academic and professional publishing programs.”
Known primarily as a regional publisher of books on New England, Globe Pequot expanded into other regions of the country with its acquisition of Falcon Guides in 2000 and Lyons Press in 2001. It maintains an office in Helena, MT for its Two Dot imprint that focuses on western regional history. William S Morris III, Chairman and CEO of Morris Communications, said, “We wish Rowman & Littlefield many years of further success with this fine publishing house.” Globe Pequot Press Managing Director Alexander Merrill added, “Rowman & Littlefield is the ideal new home for our imprints. Our Globe Pequot and Falcon titles fit seamlessly with their foothold in local expertise and our Lyons imprint nicely complements their strength in the non-fiction and academic markets.”
Globe Pequot was founded in Stonington, CT in 1947 as The Pequot Press, named after a local Indian tribe. In 1981, it was acquired by the Boston Globe which added “Globe” to the name. AT&T later bought the company as part of McCaw Communications and in 1997 sold it to Morris. The company has maintained its offices in various towns along the Long Island Sound in eastern Connecticut for over 60 years.
The sale price and terms were not disclosed by either party.
