This position will support The Wilderness Society’s designations program work, focusing in particular on field campaigns strategically designed to enhance protection of national public lands through a variety of designations methods, including legislated wilderness, national monuments designation, BLM and USFS land management planning, and other efforts.
The position will be tasked with developing local, regional, and national communications strategies aimed at influencing policy debates and creating positive conservation results for key public lands issues in the Four Corners region, with a focus in Colorado, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, and Nevada.
This position is located in our Denver, CO office.
Essential duties & responsibilities
Leading and participating in the development of issue-based communications strategies, message research and development, and campaign planning (in close collaboration with the organization’s regional and/or state director, appropriate campaign staff, other communications staff, and coalition partners);
Initiating and maintaining excellent working relationships with key members of the media, with travel to various states in the region to develop those relationships as needed;
Working closely with local and regional partners and coalitions, often leading coalition communications and strategy efforts;
Developing new messengers, through outreach and training, to effectively deliver conservation messages from diverse constituencies;
Participating in outreach, coalition and collaborative meetings on behalf of The Wilderness Society, as well as public meetings on various issues as needed;
Building partnerships with key stakeholders around campaign issues to maximize communications and outreach efforts;
Assisting TWS staff with media outreach, including handling breaking news and developing story concepts;
Crafting a variety of messaging and outreach materials that fit different campaigns accordingly, including op-eds, letters to the editor, press releases, brochures, website content and briefing packages for print and broadcast media, and utilizing paid media tactics when applicable;
Coordinating with TWS staff and outside consultants/vendors in support of assigned programs;
Managing budgets for applicable communications efforts;
Collaborating closely with TWS online team to help develop content based on your campaign and field work; and
Tracking media clips relevant to campaign and field work.
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience, Competencies, and Education
Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or marketing.
5-7 years of demonstrated experience developing communications strategies, especially in public relations, public involvement or advocacy settings
Demonstrated expertise in working with both traditional and new media (including social media)
Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communications skills
Demonstrated ability to work quickly under deadline
Experience developing communications strategies in collaborative settings with diverse interests a plus
Familiarity with environmental issues; experience in climate and/or energy issues a plus, as is organizational branding, reputation and crisis management experience
Ability to travel once or twice a month for campaign meetings and to develop media/reporter relationships
Bilingual in Spanish is preferred but not required
Video production skills a plus
Proficiency with graphic design applications a plus
Desired Characteristics
The ideal candidate has significant experience with on-the-ground campaigns, advocacy, and/or political communications work, outstanding strategic instincts, excellent writing skills, and a proven track record in media relations, social media, and broader communications initiatives. Experience with legislative/public affairs campaigns and a strong interest in conservation issues are desirable. The ability to lead initiatives, juggle competing priorities, and work effectively within teams and coalitions is essential.
