Query Call – Game & Fish Magazines, June 2019
Titles: California, Wash-Oregon, Rocky Mountains, Indiana, Great Plains, Illinois, Iowa
Editor (interim): Bob Borgwat, phone 706-838-5259

Query call is open through Dec. 11 for immediate consideration for the June 2019 issues as outlined below. Queries previously submitted that meet the current needs remain under immediate consideration for this issue.

Make note of a new opportunity in the assignments. A “digital component” will be selectively added to three assignments each month, with a separate payment of $75 in addition to the full manuscript payment and any associated photo payments. This request in the assignment will be determined at the time of assignment confirmation and commonly requires an additional block of text – about 300 words – designed to expose the storyline in a condensed form in the online community of Game & Fish Magazines. If your story is selected for this digital component, this requirement will be included/outlined on your assignment form.

Photos are requested with your completed story. Photo payments are separate from payment for the manuscript and vary from $25 to $75 depending on use.

Please submit new queries for immediate assignment in short paragraph form via email to: Bob Borgwat at bborgwat@gmail.com. Deadline for ASSIGNED STORIES is January 11, 2019.

  • REGIONAL STORIES … appear in multiple titles as shown. These are generic storylines — no place names should be mentioned (generic storyline) and all references to habitats should fit the states named. Illustrative photo selections are requested and paid as used. Story assignment code appears in bold type ahead of the query outline. My immediate needs include:
    •  D-1 — Catfish … Appears in CA/WO titles only.
As such, this story on fishing for catfish should have regional application to the West Coast  focusing on a technique-driven storyline for inland waters with similar character/habitat. Reservoir or tailwater fishing likely the best scenarios, revealing tactics for early summertime catfish fishing for channel cats, blue cats and/or flathead cats. Not a family fishing story; think inventive. This should appeal to hard-core catfish anglers who can use the expert tips/techniques exposed in the storyline. 1750 words, including related sidebar. $275/manuscript. Photo selection requested; photos pay $25 to $75 depending on use.
    • A-1 — Trout fishing … Appears in CA/WO/RM
Technique- or gear-driven story on early summer trout fishing. Not a family fishing story; think inventive. This is best written as a heavy-hitting, “how-to” story related to techniques used on Western waters – tailwaters, freestone rivers, reservoirs, or small mountain – in summertime that produce the best trout fishing associated with the style of water in the storyline. Consider fly-fishing, trolling, mooching, bait-fishing, shoreline-only access/techniques, etc. 1300 words. $225/manuscript. Photo selection requested; photos pay $25 to $75 depending on use.
  • STATE-SPECIFIC STORIES … specific destination pieces and/or state-related issues, with emphasis placed on references to state elements — such as destinations, local experts, state resources, etc. Illustrative photo selections are requested and paid as used.
