Managing Editor

National subscriber- and newsstand-based consumer magazine is seeking an experienced, highly organized, and creative managing editor. Natural Solutions: Vibrant Health, Balanced Living (, formerly Alternative Medicine magazine, serves 225,000 readers as a trusted voice in the healthy living and natural wellness arena. The magazine is published eight times per year.
By working with the editor-in-chief, the managing editor has lead responsibility for the execution of the editorial and creative aspects of Natural Solutions magazine and its accompanying Web site. Duties include content development, planning, and concepting; assigning stories to staff and freelancers; overseeing and managing all aspects of production cycles, including editing, proofing, writing, and approving page designs; creating and enforcing schedules for editorial and art departments; assisting editor-in-chief with various duties/projects; and working with sales and marketing to concept, write, and produce promotional materials as needed.
The ME will help in the planning and management of specials, supplements, and surveys, and help develop new ideas for content, events, and other brand extensions in conjunction with the rest of the management team.
Additionally, the ME will serve as the second-tier representative of the magazine to the press, industry, current and potential advertisers, and readers, which may include travel to advertiser meetings as well as trade shows and consumer events.
The right candidate will have proven, demonstrable organizational and production-management skills, especially in scheduling and editing. Expertise in Creative Suite a must, and a strong design sense is desirable. Understanding of natural health, integrative medicine, and the LOHAS marketplace is a definite plus. This position interacts with and leads a small edit and design staff in our Boulder, Colo., office and will work closely with a growing list of talented freelancers.

  • Minimum of two years experience as a managing editor for subscriber- and newsstand-based consumer magazines
  • Demonstrated ability to guide and motivate a creative and highly independent edit and art staff and interact with sales, marketing, and circulation groups
  • Impeccable writing, editing, and proofing skills; strong design sense
