Boundary Waters Journal

The magazine publishes in-depth articles that help readers enjoy their trips to canoe country. Subject matter is varied and includes detailed wilderness canoe trip journals, fishing how/where to, camping advice, hiking trips, wildlife profiles, natural resource issues, fiction, etc. Articles should be narrative, entertaining and inspiring. Most BWJ articles are unsolicited freelance submissions. BWJ pays $200-$500 for feature-length articles (2,000-5,000 words). Writers will be paid within 30 days of publication. Payments for photography are made separately.
BWJ is also interested in bright colorful photography of something happening within the canoe country setting. BWJ rarely publishes pure scenics and prefers photographs with human subjects. High resolution digital photos are preferable, but 35 mm color slides are also accepted. Images must be saved at 300 dpi and submitted on a CD in JPEG or TIFF format. No e-mail images please. Include a plain paper color proof of each shot and a SASE for return/response. Pay is as follows: $50 for a half page or less, $100 for a full page, $125 for a 1 ½ page spread, and $150 for a cover photo or two-page spread. Payment is made within 30 days of publication.
