Outdoor Market - writingThe Montana Standard, a daily newspaper in Butte, is seeking a reporter to cover natural resources and the environment.
This is a dream job for journalists with a knack for science reporting and a love of the outdoors. Butte is home to one of the country’s largest Superfund sites, where reclamation work is underway to restore years of mining damage. The city is also surrounded by some of the most beautiful and rugged scenery in the Northern Rockies.
The reporter who lands this job will navigate the politics and science driving environmental policy, produce compelling investigative and watchdog pieces and spend considerable time in the field taking readers inside one of the most important beats in the state.
A background in a science-related field is preferred. Previous journalism experience is required. Photography skills are a plus. The best candidates will provide clips that demonstrate a strong grasp of issue-focused reporting, colorful storytelling and clean writing.
The Standard is the region’s largest daily newspaper and southwest Montana’s leading news source. We’re a digital-first newsroom, and reporters are expected to break news for the Web and report incrementally, supplement stories with online-exclusives and file real-time breaking news reports from the field.
Our coverage area includes some of the nation’s premiere recreation destinations. Hunting, hiking, fishing, skiing and camping opportunities abound. A hub for the regional economy, Butte also offers shopping, a vibrant arts scene and affordable housing.
We offer an excellent benefits package, including medical, dental, vision, a 401K plan and paid time off.  We are an equal-opportunity employer. You can see our website at www.mtstandard.com and learn more about our parent company at www.lee.net.
