Western Horseman

Western Horseman accepts queries from freelance writers via e-mail, edit@westernhorseman.com; fax, (719) 633-1392; and snail mail, Western Horseman, Attn: Editorial Submissions, 3850 N. Nevada Ave., Colorado Spring, CO 80907.
The editor may ask the freelancer to produce a manuscript for review if the proposed articles fits Western Horseman’s editorial schedule. Contributors should submit manuscripts via e-mail as Microsoft Word attachments. Freelance articles are written “on spec.” Even after purchasing rights to a manuscript, Western Horseman does not guarantee the work will be published. Western Horseman pays upon publication and purchases first-time publications rights, as well as an option for one future use for Web use or printed use. Pay ranges from $150 to $1,000 depending on quality, length, etc.
When sending manuscripts, include a working title as well as a one-sentence “deck” or subhead. Manuscripts should be broken into sections, with subheadings, for greater readability. Sections should be roughly equal in length. Brand names should be excluded from manuscripts. Make every effort to fact-check your story with sources.
