Vermont Life

The magazine is interested in any article, query, story idea, photograph or photo essay that has to do with life in Vermont. With most ideas, Vermont Life prefers written queries first. For editorial direction, keep the various departments in mind: Downtowns; Getaways; Ingenuity; Outdoor Recreation; The working Landscape. Vermont Life’s scope is more towards solid journalism than personal or anecdotal essays.
Most articles run approximately 1,000 words. Payment ranges from $350 to $900 depending on length and research involved. Vermont Life buys first North American Serial Rights. The copyright normally reverts to the author after publication.
More information about contributor guidelines is available at www.vermontlife.com/about_vl/guidelines.htm.
Vermont Life also accepts photography submissions. In each issue of the magazine, a number of pages are set aside for purely scenic photography, ranging from landscapes to activities in a Vermont setting.  Deadlines for these seasonal submissions are available at www.vermontlife.com/about_vl/guidelines.htm. Digital submissions are preferred.
Vermont Life purchases one-time exclusive use for six months from publication date.  Occasionally, the magazine will seek permission for second use in calendars or other products, for which there is additional remuneration. Payment for any photographs selected for use by Vermont Life includes the possible reproduction of those photographs in connection with the advertising and promotion of Vermont Life and may include use on the Vermont Life Web site.
Photographic assignments are contacted at $250 per day, plus mileage and pre-approved expenses. Payment for stock photos range from $75 to $500 for covers.
