The magazine is for people who spend a great deal of time and money living, training, and hunting with their dogs. The magazine’s primary objective is to help readers becomes better companions, trainers, and hunters. Each issue features breed articles, the latest information on canine medicine and nutrition, hunting stories emphasizing the dog’s role in the field, training articles and short filler articles. The editor prefers written queries.
Feature stories run 1,200-1,800 words, dog training articles 1,000-1,500 words, and filler pieces 500 to 1,000 words. Gun Dog stories are well illustrated. Generally, the writers back up their copy with a good selection of color photos and a caption for each photo. They are considered a part of the story and are not purchased separately. Gun Dog pays upon publication and buys exclusive rights for the first year. After the first year, Gun Dog retains non-exclusive rights.
