BoatU.S. Magazine is looking for an outgoing, highly organized Managing Editor to join our small, motivated editorial team. Together we put out the liveliest, most informative boating magazine for American boaters (sail, power, and fishing), who make up the 500,000+ members of the Boat Owners Association Of The United States. BoatU.S. Magazine is the primary benefit of membership in this organization, and it’s filled with inspiring features, DIY stories, seamanship and boat-handling step-by-steps – all written with authority and a deep knowledge of boats and boating.
Are you a self-motivated “doer,” with meticulous attention to detail, punctuation, grammar, and the art of good story-telling? Are you someone who enjoys seeing projects through to completion at a high level of accuracy; and do you have the ability to juggle various complex projects at the same time without losing track of any moving parts? Are you a person who tends to solve problems by building relationships? Can you write compelling news reports? Can you come up with provocative headlines, and bring humor to your copy? Then we need you.
This Managing Editor position weds traditional journalism with the ability to create content that genuinely helps our members be better boaters, creating a trust between our members and our association, and keeping our members engaged in the sport they love. Our Managing Editor is the key person responsible for overall project management for all regular (6) and special (2) issues of BoatU.S. Magazine, as well as any related products such as web content. The Managing Editor will need to:
• Organize and track the flow of all pieces of content
• Maintain internal deadline schedules, identify schedule conflicts and resolve them
• Coordinate editing, copy editing, layout, and web-content flow
• Manage a pool of freelancers who submit news stories
• Serve as liaison with production and other internal stakeholders
• Edit and rewrite stories, and source excellent photos
• Work with others as part of a tight team
• Proofread and copy-edit editorial content, and be the final person to assure accuracy of facts and copy
• Map workflow of editorial team across products to ensure efficiency and streamlined output
• Oversee post-issue tasks
Previous experience as a Production Editor or Managing Editor
A proven passion for, and working knowledge of, boats and boating
Experience with SEO best practice
