HIGH COUNTRY NEWS
General Statement of Duties: The Associate Publisher is the top day-to-day administrator in the office, overseeing all business aspects at High Country News, including finances, human resources, circulation, marketing, and I.T. and website development, with an overall goal of expanding the reach and influence of High Country News and its products.
Supervision Exercised: Directly oversees the Circulation, Business, Marketing, and Web/IT Managers.
Supervision Received: Serves under the general direction of the Executive Director.
Example of Duties: The following duties are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive.
Develops and implements strategic plans to expand the market for High Country News products: the magazine, syndication service, Web site and other digital products, HCN books, and other developing media. Evaluates the plans periodically and revises as needed.
Develops and implements a wide variety of circulation strategies, including direct mail, on-line promotions and other methods. Through strategic planning and regular meetings, coordinates the work of all of the marketing functions at HCN, including advertising, syndication, circulation, public relations and merchandise.
Oversees major infrastructure projects, such as website redesigns, database upgrades and other systemic improvements needed to remain an efficient, modern publisher.
Works with Executive Director to develop annual budgets and oversee financial health of organization on an ongoing basis.
Works with Executive Director to set and execute HR policies in coordination with Business Office. Recruits, hires, trains, directs, and evaluates departmental staff and consultants, as needed.
Prepares monthly reports for Executive Director and tri-annual reports for Board of Directors. Makes recommendations to the Executive Director for areas of new investment.
Is familiar with HCN’s Diversity Plan and takes a leadership role in developing strategies to execute the plan within the organization.

A love of the American West and the role HCN plays in communicating complex issues to a diverse public.
Education: Undergraduate degree in marketing, business, or related field. MBA or other graduate degree preferable.
Experience: At least five years of progressively responsible experience in marketing and administration, preferably in the publishing arena. At least five years experience in effectively managing a team of employees.
