JOB: Magazine editor, Alaska Sporting Journal

Outdoor Market: jobStart date: Midsummer 2013; first monthly issue prints in late summer/early fall
Job Description:

  • Issue planning for at least 40 full editorial pages and six-plus major features every issue
  • Writing pieces for the magazine
  • Contracting and otherwise acquiring written material and images within budget
  • Copy editing and headlines
  • Instructions for design team
  • Proofreading and layout modification in Quark (Mac)
  • Cover design and coverlines
  • Blogging, Facebook and website updates
  • Invoicing


  • Two to three years editing/copyediting experience
  • Expertise in the English language, including grammar
  • Knowledge of Alaska sporting and recreational trends and opportunities OR deep understanding of fishing and hunting in Alaska
  • Knowledge of AP style
  • Attention to detail and deadlines a must
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Google Mail

  • Proficiency in Quark, the layout program we use
  • Ability to work on both PCs and Macs
  • Blogging experience
  • Budgeting experience
  • Fisherman or hunter
  • Ability to multitask
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines
