The executive editor manages the day-to-day editorial workflow of Ducks Unlimited magazine and is involved in all phases of the editorial process, including feature writing, assigning and reviewing submissions from freelance contributors, copy editing, proofreading, writing titles and captions, and generating creative story ideas. The executive editor collaborates with the editorial director in establishing editorial policies, maintaining quality standards, and planning content. This position interacts with freelance contributors, helps manage the daily workflow of the senior editor and digital media editor, and manages the magazine in the editor’s absence. This individual also researches and writes articles on a variety of topics related to waterfowl, wetlands conservation, and waterfowl hunting. Additionally, the executive editor is actively involved in the management and production of Puddler, DU’s youth magazine, as well as content for DU’s digital media.
The ideal candidate will combine a strong interest in waterfowl hunting, waterfowl behavior and biology, and wetlands conservation with proven writing and editing skills. Some travel is required, and the executive editor will be expected to represent Ducks Unlimited in a professional manner while on assignment. Candidates should hold a bachelor’s degree in journalism or English and should have extensive experience in print journalism. Proficiency with Microsoft Word is required, and familiarity with Excel and PowerPoint is helpful.
The executive editor reports to the editorial director, interacts daily with other members of the editorial staff, builds and maintains relationships with freelance contributors, and works closely with the design staff. Additionally, the executive editor coordinates frequently with members of the conservation staff and with communications specialists in Ducks Unlimited’s regional offices.
