OWAA provides members (and sometimes non-members) access to professional development content to help improve your craft, stay up to date on the latest and greatest achievements in the outdoors and outdoors industries and attain new story ideas. OWAA events include:

  • An annual, in-person conference (generally in the June/July time frame)
  • An annual virtual event in February
  • A series of webinars throughout the year on the second Wednesday of the month at 7 P.M. Eastern (followed by a casual social hour for those that would like to stay on to chat and network)

Non-members that attend OWAA events and then decide to join later can have the registration fee for the event attended subtracted from the price of their annual dues.

OWAA 2021 - Virtual Conference

2/13/2021 from 9:00 AM to 9:30 PM ET

After the success of our first ever virtual conference in 2020, we decided to make a virtual event part of our regular, annual programming (in addition to our traditional, in-person event which in 2021 is in July at Vermont's Jay Peak Resort)!

More details are TB but this one-day event will present speakers to inspire you and sessions to further your professional development. There will be networking, a silent auction and, if you're not too careful, perhaps a bit of fun too. The theme this year is 'Seeking Stability'.

Sessions and speakers are still in the works but the schedule could look something like this (all times are ET):

  • 9-10 a.m. – Keynote (TBA)
  • 10:30-12 p.m. – Concurrent sessions:
    • Gear gallery showcase
    • Top issues introduction
  • 12-2 p.m. – Break
  • 2-3 p.m. – Concurrent sessions:
    • Decolonizing outdoor communication
    • Seeing the Light in Outdoor Photography (how to use natural light to create shape, mood, and attention)
  • 3:30-4:30 p.m. – Concurrent sessions:
    • Outdoor recreation and climate change -- from wildfires and floods to shrinking winters, covering how the two intersect in an accessible way
    • Pay for Your Project - How to fund a major story when media outlets don’t have money. (Kris)
  • 4:30-6 p.m. – Break
  • 6-7 p.m. – Storytelling event (Theme: 'Fresh Starts')
  • 7-9 p.m. – Networking hours
