GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The editor of Wyoming Wildlife will steer the publication through its 80th year of publication, implementing a vision for continuing to showcase some of the most incredible animals on the planet and promote the people and places sustaining wildlife.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed in the job level.

  • Oversee the monthly publication of Wyoming Wildlife, the publication of the Wyoming Game and Fish Department.
  • Provide editorial direction for articles and other content in Wyoming Wildlife.
  • Strategize with communications team and department on the future direction of the magazine.
  • Serve existing subscribers and find new customers.
  • Generate story ideas and responds to pitches.
  • Secure freelance writers and manage their contracts.
  • Obtain intra-agency content and submissions, maintaining liaison with department personnel in the field.
  • Edit articles submitted for publication.
  • Understand and comply with media law and industry ethical guidelines.
  • Coordinate with other divisions of Game and Fish to meet agency priorities.
  • Manage contracts, requests for proposals and relationships with vendors.
  • Develop an annual budget and track revenues and expenditures.
  • Research and write articles for Wyoming Wildlife magazine.
  • Oversee business aspects of Wyoming Wildlife including payment of bills and management of relationships with print and fulfillment vendors.
  • Attend regular section and agency-wide meetings to offer expertise and develop strategy.
  • Network with other professionals in the field of wildlife management and magazine publishing.
QUALIFICATIONS:
PREFERENCES:Preference will be given to those with multiple years of experience in magazine publishing and those with a bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, English, public relations, natural resources, fish and wildlife management.
Must have a valid driver’s license.
KNOWLEDGE:

  • Extremely organized, ability to work independently, handle multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of individuals and constituents.
  • Knowledge of magazine printing and reproduction processes and techniques.
  • Knowledge of and practical application of principles and current trends and issues in magazine publication.
  • Working knowledge of wildlife management, outdoor recreation, and conservation including hunting, fishing, and trapping.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of graphic design, visual communication and desktop publishing.
  • Skilled in feature and news writing; methods and techniques of editing.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Bridge, and Adobe InDesign and other design software packages in Mac and PC platform.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Bachelor’s Degree (typically in Multi Media Design)
PLUS
Experience: 0-3 years of progressive work experience (typically in Multi Media Design) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Multi-Media Design Specialist II
OR
Education & Experience Substitution: 4-6 years of progressive work experience (typically in Multi Media Design) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Multi-Media Design Specialist II
