On April 19, 2013, I was notified that THE BAREBOW! BOOK had won the top award — the Gold Award — in the category of “Sports/Fitness/Recreation.”

Dear Fellow Members of OWAA,
As many of you know, during the first 18 – 20 months after BAREBOW! was initially published in the fall of 2008, it garnered many awards (five, to be precise) — including a top EIC award from OWAA, as well as the Mossy Oak PINNACLE Award from POMA. When I republished the 360,000-word, ten-pound coffee-table book as a 7-volume digital series of eBooks in late 2012, I entered that as a single-item entry into the national eLit Awards Competition, sponsored annually by the Jenkins Publishing Group. On April 19, 2013, I was notified that THE BAREBOW! BOOK had won the top award — the Gold Award — in the category of “Sports/Fitness/Recreation.” Quite frankly, I was not expecting any such success, since that broadest of all possible categories meant my entry had to compete against hundreds of other works in such fields as fishing, mountain-climbing, skiing, hiking, cycling, tennis, golf, all water-sports, baseball, basketball, and football — to name just a few. Over the past seven years, BAREBOW! has been reviewed in print by over a hundred magazines and newspapers around the country (including by a number of OWAA Members) — all of them positive, without exception. I would ask that one of you please set me straight, if I’m in error here, but I believe it is an accurate statement, to say that BAREBOW! has now won more literary honors than any other hunting book ever published.
My purpose, here, is not to boast, but only to lay the groundwork for the news I want to share with you today. Even though BAREBOW! came out seven years ago, it now seems to be taking on a new life of its own. Sales drop off significantly after the first couple of years for nearly all print books. To my delight, book sales for BAREBOW! have been the past three, successive years, and — more importantly — stories from my book are currently being re-published in no fewer than four different web magazines, at the same time.
1) OUTDOORHUB: In June of 2013, this fine hunting/fishing website launched an ongoing series, titled, “The BAREBOW! Chronicles”. For well over two years, at the rate of one new tale every two weeks, my stories have been reaching an ever-expanding readership. Chronicle #57 just went up last week (called, “The Swimming Bear Polka”).
2) SPORTSMAN’S NEWS (official publication of Sportsman’s Warehouse): In August of this year, the stories from my book began appearing monthly in SN’s digital online magazine, under the name, “The BAREBOW! Sagas”. The November Issue just came out yesterday, and story #4 (called, “El Flechador del Sol”) can be accessed on pages 58, 59 & 61, by clicking on this link:http://issuu.com/sportsmansnews/docs/sportsman_s_news_november_2015_digi?e=10374194/30999204
3 & 4) DEER HUNTING ONLINE and BEAR HUNTING ONLINE: Both digital magazines are bi-monthly, published in alternating months by Turnbull Publishing. Each issue of both magazines will carry a feature story, drawn from my book — to be salted, from time to time, with new stories written since the print book came out.
I pray that Craig Boddington was prophetic back in early 2009, shortly after BAREBOW! reached the market. He wrote, “BAREBOW! is truly a landmark achievement and will become a classic.” Or perhaps outdoor writer Dr. J. Y. Jones was clairvoyant when he wrote, “I think this will become one of the most coveted hunting books of all time.” I know history, alone, will determine such matters, but it is starting to look as if Craig and J. Y. may have had an accurate instinct. On my books’ website at www.barebows.com, you will find thirty more rather extraordinary testimonials that humble me greatly whenever I reread them.
Jim Slinsky, radio host at Outdoor Talk Network, reviewed BAREBOW! in 2009, saying, “There has never been a book like BAREBOW!, and probably no one will ever duplicate it. It is so extraordinary in the present, we need not wait for time to establish it as part of history.”
Yet, of course, only time will tell the real story of this book — and perhaps make prophets out of Craig, J. Y. and Jim! Nonetheless, something would clearly seem to be happening out there. For those of you who reviewed BAREBOW! several years ago now, maybe a follow-up story is in order. For those of you who never wrote an article or did a radio interview with the author before, perhaps something would be timely right now — with Christmas less than two months away.
The book first came to market in September of 2008, at the worst possible time, with the economy in shambles. Cabela’s was getting ready to carry BAREBOW! in their stores — when it suddenly became obvious that a $95 retail book was not going to do well in those depressed economic conditions. Today they carry no books they can’t be retailed for under $30. As it turned out, I had 5000 copies printed of the cloth hardcover edition. Although the cowhide leather-spined, slipcased, Limited Edition copies (750 bound) are all but gone, I’ve still got around 1800 of the Regular Edition yet to sell. It has been priced retail at $55, ever since the eBook series came out in 2012. HOWEVER, the good news for Christmas shoppers is that I’m now selling the Regular Edition by the box of four (the way they arrived from the printer) at my wholesale price of $30 per copy! So, a full box of four can be ordered for only $120 (plus S & H). Any one of you who owns this book, or has looked through a copy, knows what a real bargain that is. Particularly since it is 50% a Fine Art book, illustrated by the amazing wildlife art of Hayden and Dallen Lambson.
I will be happy to send a complimentary copy of BAREBOW! to any OWAA colleague who lets me know that he or she is willing to do a serious review of the book — either on-air, or in print. Once the review has been done, if you wish to keep the book for your own library, I would simply ask that you reimburse me for the shipping and handling costs ($19.95). The shipping carton weighs about 11 pounds, but the book is well protected.
Thanks to all of you for reading through this lengthy missive. I hope you will feel it was worth your time to do so. For those of you who’ve never had any exposure to BAREBOW! until now, the attachments to this email will give you a much better understanding of what my unique and much celebrated book is about.
Only the best to you in the rapidly-approaching Holiday season,
Dennis Dunn

MISSOULA, Mont.–Robert Model of Cody, Wyo., has received the Boone and Crockett Club’s Sagamore Hill Medal–the organization’s highest honor.
Model is only the ninth individual to receive the award since its creation in 1948.
A special honor given for distinguished devotion to the objectives of the Club, founded in 1887 by Theodore Roosevelt, the Sagamore Hill Medal is given by the Roosevelt family in memory of past members Theodore, Theodore Jr. and Kermit Roosevelt.
The award was presented Sat., Dec. 7, 2013, at the Club’s annual meeting in Denver.
Model is a longtime leader, past president and founding chair of Boone and Crockett’s Government Affairs and Conservation Policy committees. A Club citation presented to Model reads:
“…For tenacious focus on the historic ideals and vision of the Boone and Crockett Club’s founders; and
“For absolute insistence on the perpetuation of the Club’s original mission, and continued advancement of the Club’s historic legacy of achievement; and
“For leading the Boone and Crockett Club back to its historic leadership role in the national conservation arena and in Washington, D.C., the keystone of the Club’s second century of its legacy of achievement; and
“For inspiring the creation of the Sporting Conservation Council, a federal advisory committee, and his chairmanship thereof from 2005-2007, and continuing active membership to date…”
In a congratulatory letter to Model, US Sen. Michael Enzi of Wyoming wrote that the Sagamore Hill Medal is “only given to those who have made an overwhelmingly unique contribution to the Club that will likely change the Club for the better, forever. Those few words describe so very well the impact you have had on the Club and on so many things. Simply put, you have been a great ambassador for ranching, for Wyoming, for the Boone and Crockett Club and for so much more…”
Previous recipients of the Sagamore Hill Medal include Jack S. Parker (2007), George C. Hixon (1997), Philip L. Wright (1996), William I. Spencer (1992), C.R. “Pink” Gutermuth (1987), Robert Munro Ferguson (1977), Richard King Mellon (1968), and DeForest Grant (1952).
The Club also presents a Sagamore Hill Award for outstanding big game trophies. This award, presented only 17 times since 1948, honors extraordinary hunts that exemplify the sporting values that Roosevelt championed–fair chase, self-reliance, perseverance, selective hunting, and mastery of challenges.

DENVER, Colo.–At a meeting marking the conclusion of Boone and Crockett Club’s 125th anniversary year, held at the Brown Palace Hotel in Denver on Dec. 7, attendees revisited the Club’s first order of business at its inception–saving Yellowstone Park for all Americans.
Founded by Theodore Roosevelt, George Bird Grinnell and other concerned sportsmen in 1887, the Club used social activism and the legislative process to protect Yellowstone’s unique landscape and resources, all while instilling a new conservation-over-exploitation consciousness in North America.
“Yellowstone, our first national park, was being plundered by poaching, mining and timber interests, and a railroad was being proposed through the park that would accelerate the abuse,” stated Club president, Bill Demmer of Lansing, Mich. “At the time, conservation wasn’t even a word in the English language and the thought of wise use without waste was counter to a philosophy of unlimited take without regard for the future, which was prevalent at the time.”
Billed as America’s Playground, Yellowstone was weeks in travel away from population centers in the East. To save it, the Club used the media to romanticize the wonders of Yellowstone and expose the American public to its plight.
Through these efforts, people who had never seen Yellowstone, or even knew what a national park was, came to realize that this special place belonged to them, and they were determined to protect it. An outcry of public support reached the halls of Congress, and legislation proposed by Boone and Crockett members to expand the size of the park, secure its borders, and to send the U.S. Calvary to enforce conservation laws, passed easily. The Yellowstone Protection Act was passed in June 1894.
Through social activism, the Club was able to achieve a watershed decision to elevate conservation–and establish a mode of operation that the Club has used ever since.
“Our politicians work for the people that hired them,” Demmer affirmed. “The abundance of wild places and wild things we all enjoy today is largely the result of citizen engagement insisting on beneficial policies and legislation. Although the Club is most known for its big game records, educating the public and enlisting their support for conservation policy has been our main thrust–and that will continue. Our wildlife and the habitats that support them depend on an informed citizenry.”
The new Farm Bill, up for Congressional approval now, is yet another example of powerful conservation legislation that the Boone and Crockett Club helped draft and advance with the support of the people. The bill impacts many things of great importance to all Americans, including the quality of our food, the quality of life for those who provide our food, and the quality of our air, water, land and wildlife.
“One challenge for us in crafting a new Farm Bill–the Agriculture Reform, Food and Jobs Act–has been to continue and improve conservation and forestry programs under major budgetary constraints. In doing so, so far, 23 conservation programs have been consolidated into 13 programs and conservation and forestry spending has been reduced by $5.6 billion over the next 10 years. Even with this reduced spending, we are still moving towards having one of the best Farm Bills for conservation and forestry our nation has ever seen,” Demmer concluded.

On a December 12 telephone press conference, scientists will discuss the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s expected decision to remove the Yellowstone grizzly bear population from the Endangered Species List. A primary question before the USFWS is whether the population’s continuance is dependent on the availability of whitebark pine nuts, in dramatic decline due to climate change.
The wheels to delist are being set in motion at the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee meeting, taking place in Missoula, Montana, December 10 and 11. If plans proceed as expected, the USFWS will begin drafting its delisting rule next month.
A delisting would normally be cause to celebrate, but outside scientists caution that a decision may be premature.
WHO Dr. David Mattson, a visiting senior research scientist and lecturer at Yale, was a member of the Interagency Grizzly Bear Study Team between 1979 and 1993. As a bear researcher at the U.S. Geological Survey he authored numerous studies used to manage the Yellowstone bear population and continues to track its condition.
Dr. Jesse Logan, the retired head of the U.S. Forest Service’s bark beetle research unit, was the first to project that beetles would attack whitebark pine, which grow at elevations above 8,500 feet. He published a study in 2009 that found beetle infestations were occurring across 95 percent of the Yellowstone Ecosystem. This summer, he was part of a team, lead by a Utah State researcher, that discovered there has been a regime change in infestations. They are now occurring year after year, in something of a slow, steady death march, in addition to the large-scale outbreaks still taking place.
Kristin Carden, an attorney with the environmental law firm Earthjustice, is monitoring the agency’s decision making process to ensure compliance with the Endangered Species Act.
Melanie Fitzpatrick, a climate scientist at the Union of Concerned Scientists, will moderate the call.
WHEN Thursday, December 12, 9 am MST/11 am EST
WHERE Call: (866) 206-7202 Passcode: Grizzly bear
A recording can be made available upon request.

Combining three technologies into one heavy-duty device, Prospec Electronics JBLMBB2020 Black Box is Bluetooth® audio streaming, broadcasts AM/FM radio and hooks up to portable media devices. Featuring a 4 x 45 watt internal amplifier, the JBLMBB2020 has a built-in RF receiver with the handheld RF transmitter sold separately (part MILRF9).
Other features include aux-in, E-prom (memory retention), USB input and control, and three pairs of RCA outputs including subwoofer. It’s capable of both US and European tuning and implements two wired remote ports.
This receiver’s face plate comes in a sleek glossy black. The black box measures 6-1/2″ W x 1-1/4″ H x 6-1/2″ L.
Operators can control the device with its simple pushbuttons for volume, tuning and programmed stations. The black box is a valuable asset in providing audio to the outdoor industry because it allows the brains (black box) to be installed separately from the faceplate. This results in an install in tight spaces, as a chassis in the typical sense has now vanished.
Prospec Electronics’ JBLMBB2020 Black Box Receiver has a retail price of $299.95.

Austin (December 6, 2013)— NatureServe today announced that Bat Conservation International (BCI) has become the first Associate Member of the NatureServe network, extending a strategic relationship between the two organizations to advance scientific understanding of bat conservation.
Bats are essential contributors to healthy, functioning ecosystems throughout the world, comprising more than 1,300 species on six continents. The services that these flying mammals provide—pest control, plant pollination, and seed dispersal—are worth hundreds of billions of dollars a year and make them essential to agriculture, forestry, and human health. Yet habitat destruction, invasive species, and other threats are causing bat populations to decline and weakening the resilience of natural ecosystems.
By joining the NatureServe network, BCI gains access to scientific and technical expertise needed to build a global database for bats. NatureServe provides expertise in species and habitats across the Western Hemisphere along with tools that help manage biodiversity data anywhere in the world. The partners anticipate that their collaboration will
• Help accelerate scientific research on bat conservation issues
• Draw attention to those bat species most at risk of extinction
• Identify places that harbor high levels of bat diversity
• Connect BCI’s network of specialists with decision-makers whose actions impact bats and their habitat
BCI is the first NatureServe network member to focus on specific species over a broad geographic range. BCI’s concentration on all things Chiroptera complements the work of NatureServe’s existing network of biodiversity information centers, which track all species and habitats within a specific geographic area. By acting as a conservation data center for bats, BCI will collaborate with other databases, conservation groups, researchers and scientific networks around the world to contribute scientific information to NatureServe’s core database. The result will enhance the quality and usefulness of NatureServe’s data and tools in prioritizing conservation, making land-use decisions and detecting early declines in bat populations.
This pairing taps the strengths of both organizations: BCI’s extensive network of bat conservation experts and NatureServe’s emphasis on providing the tools, data and expertise that inform land use and natural resource management. BCI has previously worked with the NatureServe network to recover endangered bats in the United States, for example, by using its research on bat hibernation and movements to convey the magnitude of the threat posed by White-nose Syndrome, a novel disease decimating bats across the United States and Canada.
“I cannot think of a better collaborator than BCI to be NatureServe’s first Associate Member,” said Mary Klein, president & CEO NatureServe. “Their 30-year track record in research, education and habitat management has helped ensure that bats continue their essential role in maintaining healthy ecosystems.”
“Through this exciting new partnership, BCI will work with scientists and conservationists around the world to develop the first global database of bat populations, their status and their conservation needs,” said Andrew Walker, Bat Conservation International’s Executive Director. “Together, we hope to fill many of the gaps in our knowledge about these beneficial animals and to maximize the impact of bat conservation efforts worldwide.”
