Outdoor Market: job
Birds & Blooms magazine is the #1 Bird and Garden Magazine in North America with more than 1 million subscribers. We are looking for a contributing travel editor for the magazine’s new travel department. Please note that this is not a travel position where we’re sending you to fabulous places. Instead, we are looking for a strong editor and experienced freelancer who can shape a department. Also, we want someone who knows the travel industry and can cover our focus areas—birding and gardening.
Requirements
-Familiar with nature events in North America
-Especially familiar with birding, as this is our strongest focus area
-Strong editor with experience managing a department
-Excellent research skills
-Ability to put together a calendar for events around the country
-Writer with innovative ideas and approaches for new topics or departments
-Must be able to meet strict deadlines
-Willing to take feedback from editors and apply edits
-Ability to pull out interesting tidbits and facts from places and events, featuring infographic-type stats so it’s fun and easily consumable
Payment
Roughly $500 for each department you put together. Please note that we will be paying a per department rate—not a per word or per page rate. While most of our current travel comes in under 400 words, it is research heavy.
How to apply
To be considered, please submit your resume, rates and TWO applicable writing samples via email: stacy@birdsandblooms.com. Please put in the subject line: TRAVEL WRITER. In addition, we will give further consideration to those who also submit 5-7 ideas for travel topics that can be done in a single page. We will begin reviewing applicants immediately.
