Smithsonian Digital Enterprises seeks an Associate Web Editor in our Washington DC office to conceptualize, create and manage editorial content for Smithsonian.com. Additionally, they will manage one or more “channels” of Smithsonian.com, including and focusing on scientific content, in terms of content production, audience metrics, and revenue goals.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
*Assign, edit, and produce digital content in various product areas focused on science and technology.
*Conceptualize new editorial products, and produce “proof of concept,” rollout plans and audience development strategies for them.
*Collaborate on brainstorming for developing content to help drive revenue in ad sales.
*Collaborate on interactive, audio, video and other multimedia products.
*Work with freelance writers: Assign stories, negotiate contract terms, copy edit content.
*Publish content and photos into Content Management System.
*Recruit and manage content providers for various science-related “beats” on the site and other digital products.
*Create and maintain an editorial calendar for various areas of the site.
*Monitor audience metrics and adapt strategies for enhancing audience growth and revenue.
Education and Experience:
*Bachelor’s degree from a 4 year college or university (Journalism or English major preferred).
*Minimum of 3 years’ experience in web and print journalism, with a focus on science and technology – particularly space, biology, anthropology, energy, earth science, and deep time sciences.
*Knowledge of HTML, Adobe Photoshop, blogging software, Flash applications and digital audio and video production
*Excellent written, verbal, research, organizational and analytical skills necessary to carry out duties in an efficient and effective manner. Prior experience working in publishing preferred.
*Demonstrated ability to juggle multiple assignments and meet deadlines in a fast paced environment
Salary: $44k – $55k annually – Commensurate with experience.
