BoatU.S. Magazine is the nation’s largest circulation boating magazine and part of Boat America Corporation, a Berkshire Hathaway company, offering a range of insurance products and services to recreational boaters nationwide through Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatU.S.) We are currently interviewing for an Associate Editor at our Headquarters location in Alexandria, Virginia. This position will focus on our BoatU.S. Magazine for both the print and online versions. The responsibilities for this position include the following:
*Edit and write articles for a 6x/year boating magazine, including features, profiles, and news articles.
*Copy-edit and fact-check the magazine, at all stages of production, to high standards of editorial quality, accuracy, and readability.
*Assist the managing editor, and other editors, with all responsibilities in the production of the magazine, including sourcing photos, conducting phone research, and other detailed proofing tasks – with the proven proof-reading ability to be the final reader.
*Work with the editorial team in creating new content for print magazine, and for the magazine website, and update existing readability through the implementation of user-experience guidelines, SEO strategies, and web-editing best practices.
*Work on content-optimization projects and page development, and have a working knowledge of online web-page production from start to finish in a CMS.
*Monitor site traffic and visitor behavior by reviewing site statistics and issuing data reports to ensure web content meets the needs and interests of our website visitors, who are experienced boat owners.
*Represent the magazine as needed at boat shows, and other marine events, while possessing the ability to understand boat systems, as well as the interpersonal skills to interact knowledgeably with the magazine’s readers and with members of the marine industry.
* Bachelor’s Degree
* Excellent verbal and written skills
* Strong attention to detail, grammar, and deadlines
* Proven ability to work on and accomplish several tasks and projects at one time at a high level of quality
* Some experience working with HTML, SEO, and Google Analytics
* Strong passion for boats and boating
* Prior experience working in a magazine or newspaper editorial department
* Strong working knowledge of boat systems
* Video expertise for web
