Summary of Position
As the children’s book group grows its annual title count, the special projects assistant will support a series of projects to help realize this book production goal.
Responsibilities
– In support of the children’s book expansion plan, participate in supervised editorial activities such as commenting on manuscripts, writing flap copy, performing book and market research, and creating title information sheets for books.
– Assist in acquisition projects by reading and evaluating proposals, queries, and unsolicited manuscripts; presenting them at editorial meetings; and responding to them.
– Support editors on a number of book projects, from atlases and encyclopedias to fun reference, reader and chapter books, and solo nonfiction titles.
– As the department expands, work with the team to improve administrative systems; assist with mailings to authors and contributors and other administrative tasks.

Minimum Education & Experience
High school diploma required. Bachelor’s degree, preferably in English, journalism, or communication, preferred.
Knowledge & Skill Requirements
Solid grammatical, communication, research, and writing skills are essential. Enthusiasm for books and interest in the publishing industry, as well as an interest in Kids’ content is a must. Computer skills: Microsoft Office. Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Acrobat a plus.
