February Portfolio: Kris Millgate

The quiet cast of a fly line cures writer’s block for outdoor journalist Kris Millgate. Many of her multimedia production ideas come from the time she spends outdoors in southeast Idaho, where she hosts the weekly outdoor TV segment, “Time OUT with Kris Millgate.” Through the segment, she investigates outdoor and environmental issues for TV and the Web, with cross-publication in newspapers and magazines.

Millgate recognized the meshing of the mediums four years ago and made the bold move to multimedia as a freelancer. Through her production company, Tight Line Media, she produces stories using video and voice, pictures and print, then wires and Web. Along with hosting “Time OUT,” she produces shows for Outdoor Idaho and writes for Associated Press, Post Register and several magazines.

She is a member of OWAA and the National Association of Professional Women. She won 1st place  in the magazine category of the 2009 OWAA Excellence in Craft Outdoor Ethics contest and the Communicator Award of Distinction in 2008. Her 12 years of experience and several cross-country moves prove she’ll go anywhere for a good story. See her work at www.tightlinemedia.biz. ◊

November Portfolio: Roman Jaskolski

November Portfolio: Roman Jaskolski

For almost 30 years, as a “serious hobby,” Roman Jaskolski has photographed wildlife–primarily mature white-tail deer. Photographs featured in his Portfolio were taken in the remote, northern regions of the Adirondacks. Jaskolski now makes his home in Montreal, Quebec.

“Unfortunately, as the equipment has become better and better, the deer have become fewer and fewer. Many of the remote areas where these photos were taken are now open to roads and civilization and the deer are no more,” Jaskolski said.

These images are also featured on Jaskolski’s new Web site, www.whitetail-photos.com. He currently offers one image free of charge to OWAA members (excluding shipping and handling). The free image can be used to support the member’s work, so long as it is not sold on its own. Additional prints are 50 percent off the stated price, plus shipping and handling. Discount images are subject to same criteria. E-mail Jaskolski for more information.

October Portfolio: Jack Ballard

ballardmug“On August 1, 2009, I boarded a plane in Billings, Mont. Some 3,500 air miles and two days later I touched down at the Kilimanjaro Airport in Tanzania. In the company of three other OWAAers — Lisa Densmore, Bill Powell and Wayne Van Zwoll — I set out from the Machame Gate on the lower flank of Mount Kilimanjaro for Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Though the climb represented the primary goal of trip, opportunities to photograph the flora and fauna of Kilimanjaro’s five distinct ecosystems came at nearly every bend of the trail.

After descending the mountain, Bill, Lisa and I set out to view wildlife at four of Tanzania’s National Park. Wayne had to return stateside to attend to professional responsibilities. Between the three of us, we photographed nearly 70 species of wildlife, from lumbering elephants to tiny, ferocious red ants. Despite a most unpleasant reminder of why Western visitors should take extraordinary precautions to protect their digestive tracts from African microbes, the climb and wildlife safari were truly unforgettable.”
