Stripers spawn to be released in Panhandle rivers

A small group of striped bass captured last year from Florida’s Lake Talquin produced 900,000 fingerling striped bass and hybrid striped bass. Dave Yeager, fisheries biologist with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, said all of the fry and fingerlings are being released in several Panhandle rivers. Four female and five male striped bass were held in circular tanks with mimicked natural conditions. A benefit to maintaining captive brood fish is reduced manpower and time needed to collect wild striped bass, thereby increasing the length of the striper spawning season. BoatU.S.

Boaters can forget the snow and start making plans for their summer boating vacation with a little help from the BoatU.S. Services Locator. The online tool at www.BoatUS.com/ServiceLocator uses Google Maps to show locations of marinas that offer money-saving discounts on fuel and transient slips. A new trip-planning enhancement is the addition of NOAA nautical charts that overlay onto the Locator’s Google Map, allowing boaters to see bottom depths, hazards and navigational aids all on one screen.

Bob Munson and Charlie Decker, founders of the 25-year-old Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, were recognized for establishing what has become “one of the nation’s most effective conservation organizations.” Lowell Baier, the 28th president of Boone & Crockett Club and a charter founder of the Wild Sheep Foundation, was acknowledged for following in the footsteps of Theodore Roosevelt. ISAAK WALTON LEAGUE OF AMERICA

Plans for the creation of Big Stone II, a coal-fired power plant in South Dakota, were scrapped at the beginning of November 2009, thanks in part to more than four years of opposition by the Isaak Walton League of America. The IWLA contended the creation of Big Stone II and its accompanying transmission lines running through Minnesota would create too much environmental and economic risk. The utility companies themselves halted the project due to concerns over rising construction costs, declining power demand, and pending regulations for greenhouse gas emissions. IWLA has worked since 1992 to hasten the transition from coal-based power generation in the Upper Midwest to electricity created by clean, renewable sources of energy like wind.

Wyoming Fish and Game Department

Despite a Sept. 22 ruling made by U.S. District Judge Donald Malloy to reinstate the grizzly bear’s status as an endangered species, the Wyoming Fish and Game Department (WFGD) says grizzly bear populations have been robust under state management. Originally listed as an endangered species in 1975, the grizzly bear was taken off of the list and put under state jurisdiction in April of 2007. The WFGD is disappointed in Malloy’s recent ruling returning the grizzly to federal management. The Interagency Grizzly Bear Study Team estimates that there are currently a minimum of 576 grizzly bears in the Yellowstone ecosystem and no reason to suggest that the population won’t continue to grow around 4 percent annually.
