The Arizona Game and Fish Department has a job opening for a Public Information Officer II in its Phoenix headquarters office. The position is a Salary Grade 20 (salary range $36,814-$65,827). The closing date to apply for this position is 12/09/2016.

Description of Duties: This position is responsible for providing public information/public affairs work on the Department’s activities and issues, including, but not limited to, wildlife conservation and outdoor recreation such as wildlife viewing, hunting, fishing, shooting sports, boating and OHV recreation. The position assesses communications needs and develops and implements communications plans; writes and produces printed and electronic communications products for the public; writes and distributes news releases, wildlife information pamphlets and brochures, and media advisories; handles various aspects of media relations; engages in advertising and marketing activities; provides content for the Department’s website and social media channels; monitors and responds to questions and comments on the Department’s social media channels and tracks social media analytics; participates and staffs booths/exhibits at public outreach events such as outdoor expos; provides in-the-field media relations assistance to biologists and other Department personnel; answers questions and communicates information through direct customer contact; and handles storage, distribution and inventory control of brochures and other printed communications.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: The candidate must have knowledge and understanding of the principles of written communications, mass communications, journalism and marketing.

Candidates must be skilled and able to write/create and distribute a variety of written communications products, including content for social media outlets. Must be able to develop and implement communications plans and/or marketing plans where necessary and effectively interact with news media and coordinate media interactions during critical incidents.

The candidate must possess excellent written and oral communication skills, good interpersonal skills, and must be a self-starter.

The preferred candidate will have a minimum of two years of experience as a government PIO or similar experience in journalism, communications, PR or marketing, or a minimum of two years of experience in outreach and education for an organization involved with wildlife conservation or outdoor recreation. Some knowledge and understanding of wildlife conservation and management principles would be a plus, as would the ability to shoot and edit photos and video and take media into the field in potentially rugged areas.

The position requires possession of and the ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver’s license appropriate to the assignment. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete any required driver training in accordance with Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.12.
