Although I enjoy images of flowers as much as anyone, maybe more using a macro lens, I do believe the flower thing has been over done. That is unless you are going after the anti-hunting Sierra Club folks then you are right on. Seems like that’s what got us in trouble the last time.

Curious about how we choose the cover images for Outdoors Unlimited? The June publication is also a quarterly issue, which will soon arrive in members’ mailboxes. We wanted to publish something Utah-related, since that is the location of the 2011 OWAA conference, which is only a few weeks away. So for this issue, the “where” was more important than the “what.” And where did we get this photo? I sent an email request to all members who identify as photographers, as listed our database.

Aside from this month’s issue, we seek photos based on a rotating schedule of subjects. For example, in January, a snow-covered elk graced the cover of OU. That was followed by a February OU cover with wintery scenic shot. The March issue featured a spring-like image of a bird feathering its nest. Within the past year, OU’s cover has featured a variety of images, from a bow hunter to a fisherman to turkeys (just in time for Thanksgiving).

If anyone hasn’t received those OU cover image requests, but would like to, just contact me at and I’ll make sure you are on my list.

A truly gorgeous cover. Makes me want to hike there to get in shape for hunting season…
